What do we expect at CTIA next week?

We are getting ready to head to Las Vegas next week. At Barcelona, Microsoft showed off its new mobile OS. What and Who are going to be game changers at the upcoming show in Vegas? Are we going to see more Android devices? Will Palm license it's webOs? Any new tablets? Will wee see some new tablets running Windows or Android?

Docs to Go gives Google Docs real mobility on the iPhone!

If somebody had told us that it would be a proper (read "runs off the phone") office suite that would make Google Docs really phone-friendly, we would have raised more than the ironic eyebrow. For, we had always assumed that Google Docs was a rival to the good folks who make QuickOffice and Documents to Go. After all, Google's suite was free of cost and required no installation, while those made by these gents and ladies came with price tags and demanded hard disk space. It seemed a classic cloud vs ground battle, with the twain showing little sign of meeting.

Oh, how wrong we were. For Google Docs finally can work perfectly on a handset (the Godphone, no less) and it is thanks to one of its so-called rivals, Documents to Go. The latest version of Documents to Go (Premium) comes with Google Docs syncing. We downloaded it yesterday (at $14.99, it still costs a lot lesser than desktop office suites) and after messing with a few hours, must confess to being very impressed indeed. The app adds a Google Docs folder to the list of folders you get when you launch it. Enter your username and password and add the maximum cache size the Google Docs files can occupy on your device and you are on your way.

The first sync will show you all your Google Docs files, giving you the option to download and edit them on your handset and sync them again to keep them updated. Yes, you are restricted to Document to Go's editing options while editing the files, which are rather less extensive than the ones found on Google Docs but are more than sufficient for the quick editing and writing that one does on a handset. You can even create a file and save it on Google Docs - now, that is something. And one can create or edit a Google Docs file without having to go to the Google Docs website, which is just fine for those who use pay-per-KB data plans.

All of which just goes on to prove that the cloud and ground can work hand-in-hand when it comes to handsets. Take a bow, DataViz (they make Docs to Go, in case ye knew not!)

Android finally gets Opera Mini 5!

We have known Opera Mini to be a great cross-platform browser for a few years now, so were really puzzled as to why the version in the Android Market was stuck at the rather ancient 4.2 (which was not really Android-friendly) while all other OSes were getting Opera Mini 5 beta. Well, the wait is finally over and Opera Mini 5 beta has just sailed into the Android Market literally a few minutes ago. At about 600 KB, it is not too hefty a download and praise the lord, this time seems tailormade for Android, unlike its predecessor, which used to open an entire blank window whenever you needed to key in just a URL.

We have played with Opera Mini 5 for a few hours on our HTC Hero and well, if it seems a tad sluggish, we would advise you to change its Protocol from "socket" to "HTTP" to really get it flying. It is blazingly fast and while multi-touch does not seem to be supported, the option to sync bookmarks with your desktop via Opera Link and also to speed dial Websites are just brilliant. We also love the way the browser lets you shuffle tabs in the lower part of the screen. Best of all, the browser is extremely icon-driven and is tailormade for touchscreens. It's official - Splinter Cell:Conviction coming to App Store

After a whole lot of speculation about it last week, we have official confirmation - Splinter Cell: Conviction is going to be coming to the iPhone. A number of reports have flowed in saying that Gameloft is showing off the game at GDC. The game seems to be based on the Terminator Salvation game engine and like the original Splinter Cell, will give you a third-person view of the main protagonist, Sam Fisher, as he sneaks his way in and out of different situations. The game is expected in the App Store by the end of the month.

In case you have come from a planet where gaming is banned, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series is one of the most popular gaming series of all times. HTC to invest $1 million to promote Smart in India

HTC is betting big on emerging markets like India for its first non-smartphone device - the Smart. Based on Qualcomm's BREW platform, HTC hopes to bridge the gap between smartphones and touch-enabled feature phones by usinga version of its Sense UI on the Smart, the same UI that it uses on Android and WinMo devices.

"For India, we are focusing on products in the range of Rs 10,000-15,000. We spent a lot of time to create the HTC Sense like UI on the HTC Smart. It will act as a smartphone but (will be) easy to use. Peter (Chou, HTC’s CEO) personally championed this product," said Jack Tong, vice president for APAC, HTC during an interaction at MWC in Barcelona last month. He added, "This is a new line of product and brings new opportunities for HTC in a huge market like India. We are investing $1 million upfront for the launch of Smart in India."

With the Smart, HTC will now compete with the likes of Samsung's Corby series as well as LG's new Cookie lineup. This will be a completely new ball game for HTC, which has never sold a sub-Rs 10,000 device and usually competes in the high-end smartphone space. Probably, this is where the $1 million marketing budget will come in handy. The HTC Smart launch is expected in the last week of March in India.

Mobile App Stores launched by various Indian operators!

At a time when every handset vendor has launched or is planning to launch an application store of its own, carriers around the world were feeling left out. So at MWC earlier last month, 24 International carriers announced their plans to create a wholesale platform called ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ for launching mobile application stores. Even Indian service providers such as Bharti Airtel, Idea Cellular, Vodafone Essar and RCom have joined the league, with each one of them launching their respective app stores almost at the same time.

‘Vodafone Mobile Application store’ has got more than 800 apps and has also reported up-to 10,000 downloads in a time span of 20 days. Users can find apps based on categories such as entertainment, utility, finance, social networking and games. To use the Vodafone Mobile Application Store, subscribers need to send ‘APP’ to 111 (toll free) to get the URL. The store can also be accessed through Vodafone Live! Be prepared to shop a majority of apps since only 15 per cent of the apps are free of cost. The cost of the apps might range between Rs 5 to Rs 30.

‘Airtel App Central’ is launched with more than 1,250 apps. The store will provide you with free-apps and paid-apps (prices starting from Rs 5). Airtel App Central can be browsed via Airtel Live. Airtel subscribers can also SMS ‘app’ to 54321 (toll free) to receive the URL.

The exact number of apps on ‘Reliance Applications Store’ is not known but it can be accessed via RWorld, allowing its subscribers to browse and download apps (paid and free).

‘Idea Application Store’ has been launched in association with Spice Digital. Users can download applications through the GPRS/WAP home page.

Aircel’s mobile app store Flypp, will be also launched in a few months.

RCom’s Socially app embeds social info in your address book and calls!

RCom has launched a 3G social application, ‘Socially’, that updates its users with latest feed of their buddies. Status updates, tweets and any activity of your friends on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn will be delivered to you as alerts on your 3G-enabled smartphones. Also, whenever someone calls you, it will show you the updated information of the caller across social networks.

With this application, your phone address-book will be linked to Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and the social information of your friends will be automatically embedded in your address book. The address-book will become a storehouse of social details of your contacts.

‘Socially’ is downloadable from RWorld and users can subscribe to the service at Rs 10 for 30 days without having to pay any additional browsing charges.

LG Pop lands in India as Cookie Pep

Volkswagen releases free fuel-saving game on App Store

After totting up more than a million downloads on its Polo Challenge car racing game, Volkswagen is back in the App Store. And this time, the Big V is in fuel-saving mode (coincidentally, just around the time for the Geneva Auto Salon). According to the press release that landed in our mailboxes, "The Volkswagen Think Blue Challenge is the first racing game for iPhone and iPod touch in which it is not the best times, but efficient driving and maximum range are rewarded. Those who rack up the most kilometres with the least fuel will climb to the top of the highscore list." And the game is free too, just showing that saving fuel pays, while costing nothing!

About time someone thought about fuel conservation, say we, although we must confess that we did suffer the odd speed pang when we realised that it was mileage rather than miles per hour that mattered. Anyway, gamers will be getting quiz questions between individual stages, with correct answers getting them an additional tank bonus. Current range records can be seen online in the high score table, and in keeping with the social networking frenzy, users will be able to upload their personal best scores to the Facebook fan page for Volkswagen eGames. There are also Twitter, Facebook and and e-mail buttons in the game for those in brag mode!

Tata DoCoMo commences GSM operations in Gujarat!

Tata Teleservices has launched its GSM brand, Tata DoCoMo in Gujarat, which marks the 16th circle for the carrier. The company is aiming to have pan-India presence by the end of this year.

Tata DoCoMo will offer per-second billing model for voice calls, VAS services and IVR interactions to its users in Gujarat. Customers will also enjoy special ISD tariffs of 3 paise/second on all international calls to US, Canada and to UK land-lines (without a pack). The company has also launched its BuddyNet community in Gujarat.

Opera Mini now available as a native app on WinMo

With its eyes set firmly on conquering the iPhone and Android platforms, Opera today announced a native version of Opera Mini for smartphones running on WinMo 5.0 and 6.0. Opera already has the full browser that it calls Opera Mobile for WinMo devices.

Opera Mini scores over Opera Mobile by compressing Web pages by up to 90 per cent and hence, provides a faster browsing experience. Prior to today's announcement, Opera Mini was available as a Java application that could be installed on any phone that supported Java. The native version can be expected to be faster as it will be able to utilise system resources of the device better than its Java version.

The native version of Opera Mini 5 Beta includes some of the popular features of the former Java-based version such as tabbed browsing, password manager, bookmarks and speed dial. WinMo users can head over to m.opera.com from their handsets to download the native version of Opera Mini 5 Beta.

Olive launches a 'AAA' battery powerd phone in India

At a time when most handset vendors are dabbling in phones with solar panels to cater to rural markets that suffer from prolonged electricity outages, Olive Mobile - an Indian handset vendor with ties to Haier - has gone back to the basics and introduced a cellphone that can work on a AAA battery when the primary battery runs out of juice!

Olive's FrvrOn is priced at Rs 1,699 and has a 1.5 inch display, FM radio with loudspeaker and comes with a stereo headset. Olive has not clarified about the talktime that a user would get with a AAA battery but we'd be happy if it can do an hour of calls and about a day of standby time.

The company has promised us a review unit and this is probably the first low-end phone in a long time that we are really looking forward to review!

Docs to Go update for iPhone to add Google Docs support!

A very reliable source has told us that the next version of the popular mobile office suite, Documents to Go, will come with support for Google Docs. Now, we do not exactly know what this will entail (downloading? Editing?Uploading?) but it definitely is a tad ironical that the iPhone version of the suite has got Google Docs support before the Android one. Other details of the suite that have percolated are the ability to freeze rows and columns in spreadsheets and support for multiple e-mail accounts in the premium version. All this in addition to standard features like the ability to view, edit and create MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel files; the ability to view files in Adobe PDF, Apple iWork and other formats; and the ability to send and receive Microsoft Exchange E-mail or Gmail attachments. We, however, are really interested in the Google Docs option, truth be told, as that would be bringing the cloud's favourite office suite to the Godphone.

Those who use the basic version will also have the option to upgrade to upgrade to the premium version from within the app itself. And ah, as for the prices, we hear the premium version will be US$ 14.99, while the basic one will be five dollars cheaper. Of course, all current owners will get free upgrades.

As to when this upgrade will hit the App Store, well, we are not too sure, but it is likely to be in the very (and we mean VERY) near future. We are poised to download, folks!

Must watch: Eric Schmidt's keynote address at MWC

This year's MWC was a bit different from others - Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, was finally recognised by the telecom industry and Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, made the keynote address. Neither Apple nor Google are what we call traditional telecoms players, yet, they have had a bigger impact in the telecom industry in the past couple of years than anyone else. I consider myself priviliged to be able to hear Mr Schmidt talking about how Google is making 'Mobile First' and his vision of how crucial connected cellphones will be in the coming years. Apple claims to have 're-invented' cellphones, goes after HTC for patent infringement

The patent wars continue. After Nokia and Apple suing and counter-suing each other, it is now HTC's turn to face the heat with Apple suing the Taiwan-based smartphone manufacturer for infringing 20 patents "related to the iPhone’s user interface, underlying architecture and hardware. The lawsuit was filed concurrently with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in U.S. District Court in Delaware."

“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it. We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO in a press release.

The press release goes on... Apple reinvented the mobile phone in 2007 with its revolutionary iPhone®, and did it again in 2008 with its pioneering App Store, which now offers more than 150,000 mobile applications in over 90 countries. Over 40 million iPhones have been sold worldwide.

TechCrunch got hold of the actual complaint and claims that the complaint is more about Android than HTC. It's surprising that Apple did not name Google as one of the defendants. Well, could it be because of the 'good relations' that Google maintains it has with Apple? Who knows...

Hands on: Samsung Wave at MWC

For a change, Samsung had just one major announcement at MWC - the Wave, Sammy's first phone running on the Bada platform. While the specs sound awesome - a 1 GHz processor and 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi support - our first impression of Bada was that it was inspired by the iPhone and Android operating systems. It is smooth and no doubt seems very user friendly, it lacks the 'wow' factor that we'd expect from a new platform. In my opinion, Samsung's Bada is aimed at Nokia and its ailing Symbian platform than really taking on the likes of Apple and Google.

It is a good strategy from Samsung, as it will continue to have Android smartphones in its portfolio and Bada would essentially counter Nokia's S60 devices. What remains to be seen is how big a hole would the Wave burn in our pockets. The sweet spot, in our opinion, would be somewhere close to Rs 20,000.

Skype to be downloadable for free on your Nokia smartphone!

Skype is now available on your Nokia smartphone. After a deal between Nokia and Skype, the Finnish vendor has launched a Skype client for its range of Symbian smartphones, called ‘Skype for Symbian’.

Nokia smartphone users can download this application from Ovi Store for free and can use it either through Wi-Fi or through a mobile data connection (GPRS, EDGE, 3G). ‘Skype for Symbian’ will run on any Nokia smartphone based on Symbian ^1 and soon this app will be introduced on Symbian devices by other handset vendors including Sony Ericsson.

Nokia unveils the first device from its new C-Series - the C5!

Nokia has unveiled the first device from its Cseries range, the C5. The device is a mid-end smartphone (as Nokia calls it) and is based on the Symbian S60 3rd edition OS. It has a 2.2-inch display, a 3.2 MP camera, A-GPS, 3G connectivity, stereo FM radio, 3.5mm audio jack, internal memory of 2 GB expandable up to 16 GB with a microSD storage card, a quick access bar on the home screen and a talktime of up to 12 hours.

The handheld also supports Nokia Messaging and Nokia Ovi Maps with free turn-by-turn navigation. The Nokia C5 is expected to hit certain markets in Q2 this year. The anticipated price of the handheld before taxes and subsidies is €135.

Toll-free calls to your operators might not be free in future!

A few telecom operators have sent a proposal to TRAI, wishing to charge for the calls made by customers, which are not complaints. That means if you make a call on a toll-free number to get other details and not to file a complaint, then your call might not be free.

Seeking information by calling customer care centres of various operators for details of international calling cards, internet connections, GPRS services, news alerts, astro alerts, stock alerts and other such details of VAS (Value Added Services) will be charged. The proposal also demands for a common toll-free number for all service providers.

But why are the telecom operators acting so scrooge lately? By offering cut-throat tariffs, the margins of the companies have suffered immensely. It is virtually impossible for come carriers to sustain the current tariffs and as a result, they strongly feel the need to levy charges in any way possible.

The most innovative phone from MWC: The Else Phone

It has been a couple of really hectic weeks for us at CellPassion - first we camped over in Barcelona for MWC and then we sent the latest edition of our magazine to print. And now it is time to write about some cool tech that we saw at MWC.

Rather than talking about the biggies up front, I'd first like to showcase what in my opinion is the best product from the show - the First Else phone. A product from the Else group (formerly known as Emblaze), the First Else phone showcases a unique one-handed UI that is intuitive and comes as a whiff of fresh air at a time when everyone is simply trying to copy the iPhone or Android UI.
