RIM trademarks BlackBerry Drive

Research In Motion, the company that manufactures BlackBerry smartphones, has recently trademarked the phrase “BlackBerry Drive” with the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union. The name suggests either a navigation solution for BlackBerry or even some integration with cars. Or could it be a new line of smartphones like Bold, Pearl and Storm?

We are more inclined to believe that BlackBerry Drive has something to do with RIM’s acquisition of QNX in April, a company that develops open OS that is used in many in-car audio and entertainment systems. This is what Mike Lazaridis, president and co-CEO of RIM was quoted in the press release announcing the acquisition:

“In addition to our interests in expanding the opportunities for QNX in the automotive sector and other markets, we believe the planned acquisition of QNX will also bring other value to RIM in terms of supporting certain unannounced product plans for intelligent peripherals, adding valuable intellectual property to RIM’s portfolio and providing long-term synergies for the companies based on the significant and complementary OS expertise that exists within the RIM and QNX teams today.”

We have a hunch that BlackBerry Drive is most likely to be an intelligent accessory for your car. What do you think?

Sony Ericsson files application to trademark the word ‘Nexus’ in the EU

Sony Ericsson has filed an application with the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union to trademark the word 'Nexus'.

The move is interesting, considering that Sony Ericsson had claimed at its MWC press conference in February that it had been approached by Google to create a device in the Nexus series Android smartphone but Sony Ericsson passed the offer considering that they were not an OEM company and would always launch a phone under its own brand.

So what is this application, filed on April 27 all about? The application indicates that Nexus won't be a phone but rather a UI, very much like HTC's Sense UI or even Sony Ericsson's own Timescape and Mediascape interfaces.

An excerpt from the application: "Graphical user interface software for mobile devices; and software for enhancing the user experience in a mobile device or worldwide web interface."

The only thing that beats us is why Sony Ericsson could not come up with a better name, something that's not already taken? Related posts:

Whoops! Even before Google could make the Nexus One official, it is already attracting controversies.

We have been following up on the Nexus One rather fanatically and pondering how Google would play its cards, that we totally forgot about the original Nexus Cyborgs - one that was created by author Philip K Dick in his novel Do Androids Deam of Electric Sheep and also used in the movie Blade Runner, which was based on the novel.

NYT reports that Google didn't bother to discuss using the name Nexus One with the family of the author (he'd created Nexus 6, the cyborgs the bounty hunter was supposed to track down) and they ain't too pleased.

Google cannot deny the existence of Nexus One or the fact that it is associated with the product as it has already filed a trademark application with the United States Patents and Trademark Office.

It still has a chance - all they need to do is to talk to Isa Dick Hackett, the daughter of Philip K Dick. We are sure things can work out between the two.

After all, Google hasn't found the 'evil room', yet! Or has it?

HTC Incredible trademarked, to be an Android phone

While we were investigating Google’s trademark of Nexus One, we stumbled upon one from HTC for the HTC Incredible. It could have been just one of the many fancy names companies keep trademarking every now and then but this one sounded familiar to us.

Now here’s the deal – a few days ago, someone delved into the code for HTC’s Android OS 2.1 and came across names of a bunch of unknown HTC phones and as you can imagine, Incredible was one of them. HTC has trademarked the name with the US Patents and Trademarks Office on November 19 and as expected it would be a smartphone. We’d like to believe that the Incredible would be one of the phones that HTC would be showing off in Barcelona at MWC in February.

And the plot gets murkier (or clearer, depending which camp you belong to). Google has registered to trademark the name 'Nexus One' with the US Patents and Trademark Office. So here's, the deal, the Nexus One indeed is the Google phone. Now, what needs to be seen is whether Google sells it to normal consumers out there and jeopardise their relations with handset manufacturers or will it simple seed it to Android devs like it did earlier with the Dev Phone it gave out at the I/O Event? Continuing with our raid of trademark applications filed with the USPTO, we have come across four names trademarked by Motorola between May 15 and June 2, 2009! The names, Devour (serial number 77738267), Innate (serial number 77738287), Fiend (77738298) and Vanquish (77750243) sound kinda apt for a company trying to return to its days of glory. So will these be the names of the four upcoming Moto Android phones? Quite possible, we reckon.

HTC has recently filed for a trademark with the USPTO for one HTC Vigor. What is it, we don't know, but the filing indicates that it might be a smartphone. Jeez! How many revelations can we cope up with on a single day?

Microsoft trademarks Swivel as mobile operating system

Microsoft has trademarked the name Swivel as its mobile operating system. The trademark has been filed in September last year even while it was busy showing off the latest version of Windows Mobile 6.5.

Microsoft eventually plans to do away with versions of Windows Mobile and will call it simply Windows Phone. So what could the Swivel be?

It really does not make much sense for Microsoft to rename Windows Mobile (or Windows Phone, for that matter) as it resonates with its Windows OS on the PC platform.

We believe, this could be an internal codename for some upcoming version of the mobile OS.

Samsung prepping the ‘Cloud Phone’?

We just found ourselves a treasure trove of upcoming devices and one of 'em is going to be a 'Cloud Phone' from Samsung. The trademark office describes it as -- Mobile devices, including smartphones, that include telephonic and data connection capability via Internet protocols and having a web-based communication interface to a computing network for carrying out those telephonic functions and other application services via the aforementioned IP protocols and the web-based communication interface itself.

So what's it gonna be? A cellphone with web-based OS? Or just another VoIP phone?

While we were busy raiding the European trademark office website, we stumbled upon a recent trademark for one HTC Dawn. From the description we learnt that this is an upcoming smartphone that hasn't figured on any HTC product roadmap leaked till date. So what do ya think? Is it going to run WinMo or Android or both?
