Record iPhone and IPad shipments" width="150" height="150" />I am truly amazed by the results that Apple posted today. Here is a summary of unit shipments IPhone’s and IPad’s:

IPhone – 37.04 million units. A 117% increase over the previous quarter and 128% increase over the year ago quarter.

IPad – 15.43 million units. A 39% increase over the previous quarter and 111% increase over the year ago quarter.

Here is the revenue breakdown by product:

Mac Desktop:$1.94b

Mac Portables:$4.66b

iPod:$2.53b

iTunes:$2.03b

iPhone:$24.42b

iPad:$9.15b

Peripherals:$0.77b

Software, Service and other:$0.84b

It is noteworthy that 75% of Apple’s revenues come from the iPhone and the iPad. iPhone accounts for 53% of revenues and the iPad accounted for approx. 20% of revenues. The iPhone did not start shipping till June 2007 and the iPad started shipping in April 2010. Both these products account for 72% of revenues. I am not aware of any other company that is able to generate almost three-quarter’s of its revenue from products that did not exist five years ago.

Unless there is a major disruption, I can envision Apple hitting $200 billion in revenues in a couple of years. Many have opined which company would achieve a $1 trillion market capitalization. My bet is on Apple. My thesis on Apple is rather simple. In the next 3-5 years, the company will:

Achieve at least 10% market share in the mobile device (cell and smart phone) market. Currently, Apple’s share is about 5%.

Achieve 15%-20% market share in desktop and portable computing. Currently, the share is around 10%.

Maintain dominant share of over 75% in tablets

It is truly impressive to note that a company that offers only five product lines (MAC, iPhone, iPad, Ipod and Itunes) is able to generate over $46 billion in revenues. If the much rumored iTV is to be released do not be surprised if Apple’s revenues increase by another $1o-$15 billion in the first year of its launch.

To help you understand the magnitude of the revenue. The $46.3 billion in Apple’s December 2011 quarter is:

Higher than Google’s entire 2011 revenue of $37.9 billion

More than double than Microsoft’s December 2011 quarterly revenues of $20.89 billion

20% more than GE’s December 2011 quarterly revenues of $37.97 billion

The formula for insanely great profits comes from insanely great products. I often wonder why other companies do not embrace Apple’s proven model of creating products that are elegant and simple.

Hat tip to the Apple team.

If you find the XPERIA X10 stunning, the XPERIA arc will blow your minds off. Just 8.7 mm at its thinnest point, the arc sports an 8.1 MP camera, an HDMI connector and all the works that you’d expect in a modern day smartphone.

The arc’s 4.2-inch 854×480 pixel display might sound pedestrian in the age of ‘Retina Displays’ but Sony Ericsson claims that Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine in the phone will make it one of the best displays out there.

And yes, it runs on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and Sony Ericsson tells us that it should hit stores around March this year. The lovechild of Sony and Ericsson doesn’t have a great track record when it comes to meeting deadlines it sets for itself but we will certainly keeping our eyes peeled for this one.

We had earlier reported that HTC will launch the HD7 and the 7 Mozart in India in December. The HD7 was released last week for Rs 29,990.

The 7 Mozart has been launched with Tata DoCoMo for Rs 26,490. Tata DoCoMo subscribers will get some special data offer but the press release does not mention any details of this offer.

On the specs front, the Mozart 7 has a 3.7-inch WVGA display, an 8.0 MP camera with XENON flash that can shoot videos in 720p HD resolution, 8 GB of internal memory and a 1 GHz processor.

However, like the HD7, there is a catch. Microsoft has not launched Windows Phone 7 (the OS) in India yet so many features like XBOX Live support and Windows Marketplace are not available in India at the moment. Since HTC jumped the gun, in all likelihood, you’d end up using these Windows Phone 7 devices in India for calls, text messages, multimedia and browsing the Internet. Which is really a shame as the smartphone can do much more than that.

Having said that, many users might find the 7 Mozart as a great multimedia smartphone, especially considering the price point. Windows Phone 7 as an OS is much more usable than Symbian and the UI is more refined than Android. Yes, it does not multitask at the moment, but Microsoft is expected to launch an update soon (and we hear that all current Windows Phone 7 devices will be updated, unlike Android where the manufacturer decides which device gets an update and when). This update will bring both copy/paste and multitasking to the table.

However, if you still want Android (don’t get us wrong, we are die-hard Android users ourselves), HTC should be officially launching the Desire Z and the Desire HD in India any day now (we hear that these smartphones are already making their way to some retailers). So there is still some great gear coming up from the Taiwanese smartphone giant.

After revealing the India launch of the HTC HD7, 7 Mozart and Desire HD, it now claims that the Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer will also launch the Desire Z on January 3! The site lists the MRP for the Desire Z as Rs 29,699 and is offering it for Rs 25,799.

The Desire Z runs on Android 2.2 (Froyo) and sports a 3.7-inch WVGA display. The biggest draw, however, is its slide-out (hinge ‘Z’ slide, if we may) QWERTY keypad. We believe it will be a great buy at that price and expect both the Desire Z and Desire HD to do well in India. Now time for its specs:

Today HTC officially announced the launch of the HD7, the first WP7 smartphone to be available in the country. Just like we reported, the HD7 is priced at Rs 29,990. HTC has tied up with Airtel for a special bundle that would give Airtel subscribers 2 GB of data usage per month for six months at just Rs 300. Mind you, as far as we know, Windows Marketplace is not yet working officially in India though we are told that there are ways to work around it. You might also like to check out the HTC 7 Mozart, which is also expected to be announced anytime now and we are hearing from our readers that it is already making its presence felt in some dealerships in the country.

Meanwhile, as far as other vendors go, our educated guesstimate pegs the launch of WP7 smartphones from LG and Samsung to wash up on Indian shores sometime in the New Year only.

The retailer does not offer a launch date at the moment and simply mentions that it is coming soon.

The Nexus S’ India launch would validate our theory as to why Samsung has discontinued the Galaxy S in India but we have our apprehensions about the source – Infibeam. Remember, this is the same online retailer that had not so long ago claimed that it was selling the iPhone 4 that Apple India had imported, which obviously turned out to be false.

Unlike last time, we are keeping our fingers crossed that Infibeam is not taking its customers for a ride yet again.

<a href="http://www.cellpassion.com/2010/12/28/dell-venue-india-launch/dell-venue-2/"rel="attachment wp-att-5675" >Dell’s India site is now displaying the Venue – an Android 2.2 (Froyo) running smartphone. So far, Dell has launched the Streak and a couple of OEM Android smartphones in the XCD range. The Venue has a 4.1-inch display, an 8.0 MP shooter and a 1 GHz processor. The Venue will compete with the likes of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and the upcoming HTC Desire HD, which is scheduled to hit shelves any day now.

So far, we are not impressed with Dell’s current offerings as we find the Streak to big to be a smartphone and too small to be an Internet Tablet to justify its approximately Rs 35,000 price tag. The XCD series, meanwhile, fail to register with us as these are basically OEM branded phones with little substance.

The Venue, on the other hand, can help Dell mark its presence in the smartphone space with good specs and what, judging by pictures) looks like an appealing industrial design. In our opinion, its success in India solely depends on the price tag that it will carry when it is launched in India. If Dell really wants to shake up its competitors, a sub-Rs 30,000 pricing would be ideal. Well, that’s for the company to decide and all we can share with you right now are the specs of the smartphone.

We were also the first to break that HTC intends to launch two WP7 devices right now and one of them would be the HD7 priced at around Rs 30,000.

Guess what, HTC’s India website now shows the HD7 and 7 Mozart as products available in the country. We are yet to ascertain the price of the 7 Mozart but it would be cheaper than the HD7. The 7 Mozart has an 8.0 MP camera, smaller 3.7-inch display and supports a slightly slower HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity. Rest of the features appear to be similar to that of the HD7.

SOURCE: Fone Arena

UPDATE: We have been able to confirm some more details about HTC’s Windows Phone 7 launch. The 7 Mozart is priced at Rs 28,000. Currently none of the two devices officially support Windows Marketplace (Microsoft’s App Store equivalent) but we hear that this can be worked around by registering as a US-based user. Microsoft is expected to officially launch WP7 in India along with Marketplace earliest by March and latest by April.
