Hash phone looks like Nexus One, feels like iPhone probably performs like neither

Nondescript cellphone companies vying for their share of the cellular boom in India are an inspired lot. Yeah, we have our share of BlackBerry look-alike phones from every vendor with them claiming that there is only one design for a bar phone with a QWERTY keypad, but this one takes the cake. Say hello to the W7 Hash from one Color Mobile that rehashes the best of all worlds. So you get the look of the Nexus One complete with the four soft keys for back, menu, home and search (we are not sure if these keys perform the same functions as on Android) and you have the iPhone UI with icons lifted from Apple's iOS (our favourite being the Opera logo in Safari colours). The vendor claims that this baby has a 3.2 inch HVGA touchscreen display (320x480 pixels), Wi-Fi and supports Java. In all likelihood, it would also have Dual-SIM capabilities. Priced at Rs 6,500, the W7 Hash phone will be available in India soon. If it were running Android, we would have probably not complained about the inspirations behind its existence. A beta tester from Huffington Post claims that Apple gave him and a few others the first production unit of the so-far mythical Tablet for 24 hours to play with. He claims that the device has a 10-inch display, is gesture based and is closer to the iPhone than a Mac.

And that's not all! It has two cameras, can make calls, has an application that would let you cut your own hair and also double us as a navigation device where the back camera stays alive and lets the driver see through the display!

What do we think? It is most likely to be complete BS. One, Apple doesn't go handing aroud pre-production units to outsiders to play with for 24 hours. Two, you have to be really dumb to place a 10-inch display on your dashboard and then look through it.

We bet it is just a satirical post made by the author considering all the hype surrounding the yet non-existant device.

Having hundreds of iPhone clones out there in China is hardly shocking but we were plesantly surprised when we came across this copy of the Nokia E90. Even after having been around in the market for close to two years, this is probably the first E90 clone that we have seen, and a pretty impressive one at that!

It might look similar to the real deal in this photograph but the specs come no where close to the Almighty Communicator. The clone can barely manage dual-band GSM, 1.3 MP shooter and just WAP connectivity! talk about a Communicator with basic WAP connectivity and no GPS, ha!

Atypical of Chinese clones, there is no mention of dual-SIM capability or a touchscreen! We are disappointed.

Well, at least it retails at $168 apiece unlike the $700 price the original commands.

Faking It: Nokia N96 gold, N96i with NES games!

While the original Nokia N96 is still a couple of weeks away from hitting the shelves, copies of the high-end N-series device have already started making the rounds in China. What you see above is a gold version of the N96 (obviously a fake) that comes with a 3 inch touchscreen, dual SIM card slots and 1.3 megapixel camera.

This one is called the N96i and also comes with a dual SIM card but no touchscreen and just two VGA cams. However, it supports Nintendo games! Hit the links to check out more details of these Chinese knock-offs.

Most expensive iPhone app gets a free clone!

My thoughtsÂ about the future of application repositories like Installer and Cydia for jailbroken iPhones seems to becoming true. After Apple took downÂ the most expensive appÂ from the App Store, the ‘I Am Rich’ app found its way to Cydia. the free applications repository for jailbroken iPhones. Now that’s one hell of a journey from $999.99 to $0, that too just in a matter of hours. And yeah, before you install the ‘clone’ and start bragging to your friends that you bought it, we think it’s our moral duty to apprise you that this one is called ‘Am I Rich’! So stop making a fool of yourself and let us also concentrate on more important stuff.

Faking It: Plasmas not coming to mobiles, not yetâ€¦

What can be the worst that can happen to anyone on April Foolâ€™s Day? Well, making a fool out of themselves while trying to fool others comes pretty close to the top. Whatâ€™s more, we have a winner for this yearâ€™s Foolâ€™s Day Fool.Â

The folks at AbleComm, the company that had yesterday announced plasma display for cellphones for Panasonic, seem to have slept through April 1 and decided to make up for the lost day by playing a prank the next day. They issued a press release claiming that Panasonic will be using their technology in miniature plasma displays for cellphones. As their luck would have it, many respectable media, including us, promptly reported the story.Â

As things stand today, AbleComm has withdrawn the release and has replaced it with another that nullifies the earlier one as â€˜falseâ€™. But whatâ€™s surprising is that neither Panasonic not AT&T denied reports yesterday. Nice try wise guys, now how about publishing pictures of yourselves sitting on a stool, wearingÂ conical hats with 'dumb' written on themÂ along withÂ the release?

Canâ€™t get your hands on an Apple iPhone? How about trying its â€˜cousinâ€™ aka the HiPhone? But what seals the deal, according to the manufacturerâ€™s representative, is the fact that itâ€™s got a removable battery. Err, no thank you! Weâ€™d rather stick with Jobsâ€™ baby even if it costs a fortune and we have to take it to a service centre to change its diapers.
