Intel, Nokia create joint lab to bring Star Wars’ 3D hologram tech to MeeGo devices

If Intel and Nokia have their way, your MeeGo smartphone would very soon be able to project a 3D hologram of the person you are talking to! Sounds inspired by Star Wars but that's exactly what the researchers at Finland's University of Oulu will attempt to do, in collaboration with Intel and Nokia. Apart from bringing their favourite science fiction tech to reality, they would also focus on 3-D user interfaces and experiences on MeeGo devices.

Sony Ericsson to bring alive its Green Heart concept on June 4

Back in September 2008, Sony Ericsson had announced a concept phone made out of recycled material, called the Green Heart.

"The GreenHeartâ„¢ is a full concept with all life cycle in mind it includes features such as bio-plastic housings, recycled plastic keypads, zero charger with 3.5mW standby power, HTML based e-manuals, a game style educational application â€˜Ecomateâ€™ and environmentally conscious packaging."

Now, it seems, the company is ready to announce the first commercial handsets that have benefitted from the Green Heart concept it will announce on Thursday, June 4 via a webcast. We can't wait to see what Sony Ericsson has in store for us!

Three new handsets from Nokia

Even as the Mobile World Congress looms on the horizon, Nokia has announced three new phones: the 6700 classic, the 6303 and the 2700. The three phones are targeted at different price segments and are expected to ship in the second quarter of 2009. The details:

Nokia 6700

The phone appears to be on the same lines as the Nokia 6300 barring the keypad which now seems to have rather flatenned bringing the keys on a flat panel like in Nokiaâ€™s N79. Although the â€˜DNAâ€™ of the device remains similar to the Nokia 6300, it will also feature a 5 megapixel camera, assisted GPS navigation with Nokia maps and high speed data access. The phone has been priced at around EUR 235. (Rs 14,500 approximately)

Nokia 6303 Classic

The phone comes with a 3.2 megapixel camera on a 2.2 inch screen, and Nokia claims will have excellent battery performance. The standard 3.5mm audio jack on the phone will allow the user to plug in any music accessory to the phone. The price: around EUR 135. (Rs 8000 approximately)

Nokia 2700 classic

Aimed at the lower price segment, the Nokia 2700 classic supports storage upto 2GB and comes with a 2.0 megapixel camera and a digital media player. The phone will also allow sharing of data on Ovi, Nokiaâ€™s online service. It will be priced at EUR 65. (Rs 4000 approximately)

Nokia shows off new Communicator concept device, adds touch!

During the just-concluded S60 webcast organised by Nokia, the presentation slide showed a concept device that just blew our minds away! The device seems to be an all-touchscreen phone that converts into a Communicator when the 'pencil box' form-factor is opened. According to the image, the touchscreen would then swivel to face the keyboard, which also seems to be a touchscreen than a physical keyboard! We just got three words for Nokia â€” BRING IT ON! At the Design and Elastic Mind exhibition currently underway at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Nokia and the Cambridge University demonstrated the Morph concept phone. A nanotechnology concept, users will be able to stretch or mould the device according to their mood. Nanotechnology might be able to deliver flexible materials, transparent electronics or self cleaning surfaces in the future. Nokia expects elements from the Morph concept to percolate into cellphones in the next seven years. Related posts:

After years of dismissing touchscreen user interface (probably after their experience with the 7710), Nokia is finally getting to terms with the technology, thanks to the roaring success of the Apple iPhone. Barely two days after Unwired View unearthedÂ one such concept, they are back with another one.

This time a clamshell, the patent illustrates a device with two internal touchscreens. While one touchscreen will mostly work as a display, the other one will multi-task between an input screen and a display, depending on the angle between the two displays! Sounds pretty complicated to us, but that also means new functionalities and features. Though we donâ€™t expect it to be manufactured in the coming couple of months, but it would certainly give theÂ Moto Rokr E8Â with its morphing keypad a run for its money. Who are you putting your money on?
