• Sony Ericsson files application to trademark the word ‘Nexus’ in the EU

    1

Sony Ericsson has filed an application with the Trademarks and Design Registration Office of the European Union to trademark the word ‘Nexus’.

The move is interesting, considering that Sony Ericsson had claimed at its MWC press conference in February that it had been approached by Google to create a device in the Nexus series Android smartphone but Sony Ericsson passed the offer considering that they were not an OEM company and would always launch a phone under its own brand.

So what is this application, filed on April 27 all about? The application indicates that Nexus won’t be a phone but rather a UI, very much like HTC’s Sense UI or even Sony Ericsson’s own Timescape and Mediascape interfaces.

An excerpt from the application: “Graphical user interface software for mobile devices; and software for enhancing the user experience in a mobile device or worldwide web interface.

The only thing that beats us is why Sony Ericsson could not come up with a better name, something that’s not already taken?
