Apple patent hints at storing files on iPhone without iTunes
A patent application filed by Apple envisions making the iPhone accessible on a computer as a mass storage device. This will allow users to use the iPhone to store files such as Microsoft Office documents on their iPhone, something that is not possible using iTunes at the moment.
If Apple is really serious about it, it could then allow applications to access files stored in this storage space, which could enable applications like Office suites to transfer files to and from the iPhone effortlessly. Currently, apps like QuickOffice and Docs To Go rely on having the iPhone and the computer in the same Wi-Fi network to transfer files between the two.
We are not sure if Apple would enable this functionality in the upcoming update (iPhone OS 3.1) but we sure are keeping our fingers crossed that they do.
