• Nokia acquires Symbian, Symbian Foundation gets a go…

Some more news from Nokia — the company has acquired Symbian Ltd, which now paves way for Symbian Foundation — a royalty-free, open smartphone operating system.

”Good ideas do not come from our laps alone: that’s why, unlike some of our competitors, we are committed to build a truly open system to extend the reach of our services,” said Nokia’s president and CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo at the Nokia World event in Barcelona.

The statement has been followed by a press release that states Nokia has completed its offer to acquire Symbian Ltd. The offer has met all conditions and Nokia has received valid acceptance of greater than 99.9 percent shares that Nokia already did not own. Employees of Symbian Ltd are planned to become Nokia employees from February 1, 2009.

The Symbian Foundation is expected to launch a new, open, royalty-free operating system for cellphones in the later half of 2009.
