RIM confirms BlackBerry app store
nspired by Apple’s App Store, RIM, the makers of BlackBerry handhelds, today announced its plans to launch an application store available on BlackBerry handhelds as well as on the Internet, just like we had reported earlier this month. The application store is slated for a March 2009 launch and it will also have a carrier-customised store. Just like Apple’s App Store and unlike Google’s Android Market, RIM will keep a portion of revenues generated by selling applications on this store. RIM will keep 20 percent of the revenues and pass 80 percent of it to the application developer while Apple keeps 30 percent and passes on the rest. On the other hand, Google will pass on the entire revenue to the developers.
Considering that BlackBerry is extensively used in corporate houses, RIM will provide a solution that will enable organisations that have deployed BlackBerry Enterprise Server or BlackBerry Professional Software to screen applications that can be installed among their users.
