According to a PTI report, Anil Ambani’s RCom has just launched its GSM services in Delhi by handing out a thousand GSM connections to its employees. The carrier already operates a CDMA network across the country and has GSM services in a few circles where it doesn’t have a CDMA network. But with the launch in Delhi, RCom became the first carrier to operate both CDMA and GSM networks in the same circle.

The company had earlier received a go ahead from the government for the use of dual technology in the same circle. RCom plans to roll-out its GSM services in other circles but no deadline has been fixed for the same. Rolling out a GSM network is crucial for RCom, if it wants to add more subscribers than Bharti Airtel, its rival GSM carrier. Traditionally, GSM attracts more subscribers every month than CDMA, which could be a major factor for RCom to enter the GSM business.
